Elol days are around the corner and summer will shortly be over. At night, cool autumn breeze already whispers “come home soon”,
“it is time to calm down before the commotion of the holidays”. Yet a silent voice calls you to wake up, asking “ ma lecha nirdam?”
In the final days of this passing year we are obliged to converse, make amends and request for forgiveness;
observe in retrospection the passing year, view our actions and make Teshova.
Yet how are we to do so?

Selichot Tour in a Holy Atmosphere from the Jewish Quarter to the Western Wall

A Selichot tour is a magical event. Filled with mystery and Jewish Jerusalem mystique, this tour takes us deep into Jersualem’s Orthodox neighborhoods as their inhabitants are in the Ten Days of Repentance (Teshova) and in the midst of the preparations for Yom Kipur. On the one hand, this contrasting world is so close to ours, yet, on the other hand, it can be easily missed, overlooked. It is a world whose complexities are filled with spirituality; stories of the retaining wall that has been exposed to prayers, pleads and Selichot; stories that were brought to life between the allies of the Jewish quarter. The closer you get to the Ten Days of Repentance—between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kipur—the flow of visitors, wishing to absorb Jerusalem’s unique atmosphere, increases. Naturally, all Selichot tours end at the Western Wall as a place where travelers can undergo an intense experience that is second to none.

Selichot Tour in Jerusalem’s Nachlaot Neighborhood

Always enveloped in mystery, the Nachlaot neighborhood looks particularly beautiful during the month of Selichot and mercy.
Our tour begins as we depart our everyday lives which the Nachlaot and the market area so beautifully represent. We will tell the stories of those that left the walls, feel the Jerusalem dusk atmosphere, and speak of the difference between forgiveness and atonement.
Discussing that which is “Bein Adom Lechaveiro”—especially in preparation for the Days of Repentance—we will learn all about the differences between Sephardic and Ashkenazi customs in the days of Repentance; discuss the meanings of the different “Piyutim”, their authors and the times in which they wrote. In the final days of this passing year we are obliged to converse, make amends and request for forgiveness; observe in retrospection the passing year, view our actions and make Teshova.

Selichot Tour in a Hassidic Atmosphere
at Jerusalem’s Nachalat Shiv’a and Mishkenot Sha’ananim

Meeting at the Lions Fountain, we will head out towards the Mout Zion observation point, discussing the concept of redemption at the Mishkenot Sha’ananim neighborhood. We will review different behavioral patterns belonging to different communities that live in Jerusalem. There will be an option to visit the synagogue at the Yemin Moshe neighborhood (depending on availability). Participants will be exposed to the differences in the customs of the Sephardic and the Ashkenzai. In this nightly walk towards the YMCA Tower, through the Moroccan quarter participants will hear Selichot stories from ancient times, allowing them to exit their own personal walls while, all along, witnessing the unique power of the Piyut. This tour will conclude at the Nachalat Shiv’a synagogue
